Introduction to the Unfinished Obelisk
The Unfinished Obelisk is one of the most fascinating ancient monuments in Egypt. Located in the northern quarries of Aswan, it offers rare insight into how massive obelisks were carved during the Pharaonic period. The obelisk dates back to the reign of Queen Hatshepsut in the 18th Dynasty and remains partially attached to the bedrock.
If completed, the Unfinished Obelisk would have been the largest ever erected in ancient Egypt, measuring over 40 meters in length. However, cracks appeared in the granite during construction, forcing workers to abandon the project.
Today, the site serves as an open-air museum where visitors can clearly see ancient carving techniques, tool marks, and construction methods, making it a unique and educational landmark in Aswan.
