Built in 1571 under Sultan Selim II to protect the Hajj pilgrimage route to Mecca, Guarded spice trade caravans coming from the East and Later used as a customs house and military garrison.

Napoleon’s forces captured the fort during his Egyptian campaign 1799. Early 1800s, British troops occupied it to secure the Red Sea trade
