Discover the Magic of AlUla
Hidden in the desert landscapes of northwestern Saudi Arabia, AlUla is a destination rich in history and beauty. Once, it served as a major crossroads for ancient civilizations. Today, however, it welcomes visitors from around the world. The region features dramatic rock formations and ancient cultural heritage. As a result, travelers experience a unique blend of nature and history.
Hegra: AlUla’s Crown Jewel
One of AlUla’s most famous attractions is Hegra (Madain Salih). While many travelers know Petra in Jordan, Hegra is its remarkable southern counterpart.
Moreover, it is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hegra was once the main southern city of the Nabataean Kingdom. Here, visitors can explore more than 110 well-preserved tombs. These tombs are carved directly into sandstone cliffs. Therefore, the site offers a powerful glimpse into ancient Nabataean architecture and culture.
While Hegra is the star, AlUla’s wonders are vast and varied:
AlUla Old Town: Walk through the labyrinthine streets of this abandoned mud-brick town. Inhabited from the 12th century up until the 1980s. It offers a poignant glimpse into more recent history, with over 900 houses and a ancient fortress overlooking the valley.
Dadan: The Kingdom of Lions: Step back even further in time to the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, which thrived as major trade hubs. Climb the steps to the Dadan archaeological site and see tombs carved into the cliff face. Some guarded by lion sculptures.
Jabal Ikmah: The Open-Air Library: Often called a “time capsule.” This canyon is filled with hundreds of inscriptions and writings in Aramaic, Dadanitic, and Nabataean scripts. It’s one of the most significant and accessible pre-Arabic inscription sites in the entire region.
Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil)
Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) is one of AlUla’s most famous natural landmarks. The rock was shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. As a result, the 52-meter sandstone formation looks like a giant elephant lowering its trunk. Moreover, the site becomes especially magical at night. Visitors can relax in a traditional desert majlis while enjoying stargazing.
